Councils
Appalachian State University is composed of men’s and women’s social fraternities. Each of these organizations is governed by a student-run governing council that has specific guidelines and requirements related to the recruitment of new members. Additionally, each member organization has additional requirements for students seeking membership in their specific organizations.
Interfraternity Council
The Interfraternity Council (IFC) was established at Appalachian State University in 1973 as the governing body of the men’s social fraternities. The IFC promotes scholarship, community service, social development, public relations, personal development, risk management, and cooperation among the men’s organizations.
Multicultural Greek Council
The Multicultural Greek Council (MGC) at Appalachian State University was officially established in 2019. The purpose of MGC is to provide a council for Greek organizations that contribute specifically to diversity and inclusion on our campus. MGC serves as the governing body and network for multiculturally based Greek organizations to create and maintain high standards in the life of fraternities and sororities.
National Pan-Hellenic Council
The National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) was established at Howard University in 1930 with the purpose of serving as the national coordinating body for the nine historically African-American sororities and fraternities. The purpose of NPHC is to provide service-oriented activities for the surrounding communities and the campus community, respectively; to serve as a liaison between member organizations and the University Administration; and to preside over disputes between member organizations.
Panhellenic Council
The Panhellenic Council (PHC) is the governing body for its 9 member organizations. PHC consists of an Executive Board, featuring a delegate and two representatives for each of the ten sororities on Appalachian State University’s campus. PHC helps to unify the individual chapters and make the sorority community stronger.
Affiliate Organizations
Affiliate organizations are special organizations that recognize significant accomplishments or merits (i.e. academic performance, leadership, etc) of members of the fraternity/sorority community. App State has a long history of hosting these organizations.
Order of Omega
Order of Omega is a leadership honor society for members of FSL organizations. Order of Omega recognizes juniors and seniors who have exemplified high standards in the areas of scholarship, leadership, involvement within their respective organization and within FSL, campus, and the local community. Members of the Eta Beta Chapter of the Order of Omega are selected from the top 5% of students at App State. Benefits of membership include leadership resources, scholarships and fellowships, and lifelong membership privileges.
